Rudder and Tiller (not shown here but details can be seen in
the Rigging Manual):
Rudder is held down with a 2:1 purchase (Spectra) and secured to
a trip cleat which unloads if rudder contacts
bottom. A large thumb screw also holds the rudder up or down and
is tightened while sailing.
Cornerless round tiller reduces normal varnish maintenance and
the tiller has wear protection
inside the rudder head.
A non Class legal, maintenance free, aluminum tiller is available
to institutions.

- Gunwale is filled solid underneath in bow area for crash protection
and stem has an elastomeric bumper.
- Strong, uncrushable, bow fitting.
- Internally, doubletaped, deck-to-hull construction in high collision
area.
- C/B uphaul & downhaul, vang, topping lift and spinnaker
halyard systems are all standard Club 420.
- C/B case top is marine plywood reinforced underneath for maximum
stiffness.
- Guy hook is mounted as far inboard as possible.
- Guy cleat is on a solid, tapered, mount.
- Centerboard is maximum thickness for extra strength.
- ALL fittings secured with machine screws tapped into aluminum
plates for ease of replacement. Inspection port is not required.
- Back edge of thwart is double reinforced to take hiking strap
and leave the top clean.
- Front section of hiking strap is separately adjustable. This
adjustment also holds strap up to traveller bar.
- Bolt heads are reversed on front of Clamcleats to reduce friction
underneath on the thru-deck control lines.
- Bailer is plastic to avoid lacerations when sliding over the
side during a capsize.
- Traveller end plates have no sharp corners to reduce risk of
injury and are fitted to take a bridle.
- Traveller is a round tube to reduce shin bumps and bruises.
- Top edge of the hollow keelson, a Class rule, is well rounded
and double-reinforced to reduce the cracking caused by cockpit
traffic.
- Strap fastening point is not directly loaded and vertical shockchord
lift is out of the way at the transom.
- All gudgeons are bolted.
- Gunwale is carried around onto the transom to reduce the point
damage on this frequently impacted corner.
- Transom flaps are available as an option.
